Why Championship Chess Sets Are So Expensive | So Expensive

An inexpensive chess set can sell for $20, but a handcrafted wooden set certified for the World Chess Championship costs $500. Much of the set’s value lies in just one piece: the knight. Each knight must be carved by hand to look exactly the same. Making this one piece takes two hours, and there are fewer than 10 people trained to carve knights for the championship chess sets. So, how are these chessmen made? And why are they so expensive?

  1. This video is so stupid. The chess sets are even more stupid. I died

  2. "Hair on a knights tail"? thats not its tail…

  3. Even the butthole hair of some might be considered expensive these days

  4. Bro imagine being able to carved chess pieces and selling for only 10 – 20 dollars

  5. in Germany we call this Holzer ;). Bissle drechseln und Handarbeit…

  6. i could litterally make these in my woodshop class and sell them for a 20th of the price

  7. You couldn’t play chess with just any old chess-set!

  8. How does the Knight move?
    How is the Knight made?

  9. I have a dam good game and never played on anything but plastic.

  10. Artisans my ass. Did you see the shot at 0:54? This is just another sweatshop exploiting the poor.

  11. Guys, actually the company does not make a profit on it because the wood is highly expensive

  12. Another example of nonsense exist in world. Why even use these for world championship or another game ? Why not use metals or plastics which can be made hundreds per day ?

  13. One complete tree to make just one chess piece, what a complete waste of wood.

  14. I m a carrom fan better far than chess
Many times chess won by luck but luck not works in carrom 🥏

  15. Bet these poor workers get paid peanuts

  16. “It took me 5 years to perfect the ps1 graphic horse”

  17. Hearing this overblown story, I’m thinking kickbacks and protected monopoly, sorry…

  18. i_am_and_i_do_support_the_supporters_of_supportify says:

a lego piece plus a paper writing knight, rook etc will do

  19. They be doing so much extra things for nothing

  20. This guy can definitely keep his nails away from me

  21. ♟️ Chess ♟️♟️ Is not a game where equipment quality refers. My grandpa told me one day he went to a place with his friends and it felt boring so they decided to play chess. But they had no chess set. So the drew a chess board on paper and made pieces with mud.

  22. This is a really good example of artifically making things expensive. It is a horse figure, nothing more.

  23. So expensive because these chess pieces detect anal beads

  24. These craftsmen deserve to be paid a much bigger chunk of that $500. It's only right.

  25. Ok, so how does the shape of the pieces effect the outcome of the game exactly??? Is it because it shifts information into their brain or something?????

  26. This episode is unfortunately so full of BS and profanity and doesn't really explain the question in the title.

  27. An imperfection in the shape of the pieces can't possibly affect a Master's match results. They know where each piece is because they have the match in their heads.

  28. me who draws a chess board on paper and use a rock as a rook:

  29. I would love to have a high end set like that. I collect chess sets, and while the collection is small, it covers cheap plastic, to glass, to stone. My grandmother has a handcrafted set from, I believe, Greece, that is drop dead gorgeous.

  30. To answer the question posed by the video: The chess sets are expensive, not because of the labor costs, but because they're flashy collectors' items for chess enthusiasts.

  32. you can just buy one from target for 10 bucks

  33. Farming in fiesta online like 100 years ago there was this event that you have to mine 1k rocks to gain an item, time it´s money, only 5 guy´s (from a 20-30 men´s factory) full time for a year are able to make 4 perfect knights, this guy´s have a bitcoin farm for chess pieces, and yes workers are payed 5…

  34. If you want to learn how to play chess really well, you must pay 💰 a lot … That’s why it’s so expensive to win the World Chess Championship!! Only real masters can do it, and only real chess masters are allowed to play chess with these super expensive chess sets!! Not 500$ each, but they should cost 5 000$ each because they are so, so well done 👍

  35. Is this an add for chess pieces or for Dremmel tools? lol

  36. This episode was especially fun to make after watching “The Queen’s Gambit”. One thing we didn’t have time to include is that the board alone for the full set (worth $500) costs $220. Thanks for watching this episode! What other expensive things do you think we should cover?
