About this video:
Choosing a chess opening can be tough for beginners and intermediate chess players. In this video I show you the different types of chess openings that are available, and why you might choose one over another. I talk about setup-based openings (also called positional openings), and theory-based openings (also called tactical openings). I give examples of each chess opening, including the London system, King’s Indian attack, Slav defense, Scandinavian defense (Icelandic gambit) and the King’s gambit. I give you the basic chess opening ideas and strategies for each type of chess opening, and give you chess tips and trick to choose the perfect chess opening for you.

  1. Bongcloud being an opening but creating a huge disadvantage for you just makes no sense

  2. look..in the Scandinavian Defense, I prefer to take the pawn with my queen and if he pushes knights I give check and he block with either bishop or knight doesn't matter actually I develop my light squared bishop on the defending piece to have an attack again on the king -doing this leads to the king be in-castleable near

  3. Another reason to love the French defense. Can usually play d5 no matter what their second move is, and it dictates a lot of the flow of the match. Very complicated, though.

  4. Hey There,
I was wondering whether you can help me out here in understanding something. I always hear people saying that they were going to โ€œplayโ€ X opening, but I never understand what that even means. Because doesnโ€™t the opening which is โ€œplayedโ€ depend 50% on what moves your opponent is going to play – meaning that you really never have 100% control going in, even if you think – โ€˜Today I am going to play the Spanish openingโ€™โ€ฆ Letโ€™s say your opponent doesnโ€™t respond rationally (assuming that there is always a 100% BEST and only move to respond to the first move in the sequence to โ€œplayโ€ the Spanish opening) so therefore, you arenโ€™t playing that opening, as the game has now gone off-script/theory – and/or transposed into another opening, etc.
In addition, if you are playing black, what would it even mean to โ€œplayโ€ an opening, since every move you are making is responding to what white did? Does black have different specific openings which they would want to โ€œplayโ€ in response to what white is trying to do?
These are exactly the reasons why I donโ€™t believe in โ€œplayingโ€ openings. To me, there are certain principles which I want to follow, as far as what I want to achieve in my โ€œopeningโ€ (from the standpoint of how I want to play and coordinate my pieces) from a positional standpoint – but I wouldnโ€™t memorize lines – since I want to actually see what I am doing.

Could you please help me out in understanding this?! (Sorry, if I sound like a novice. I donโ€™t really play games of chess that often, but I periodically study the game. For example, I was just studying about the different player types: activist, pragmatist (both tacticians); reflector, theorist (both strategic/positional players). I have also studied tactics (fork/double attacks; pins; skewers) in the past; and I recently started studying strategy – positional understanding, for example, where the best places on the board are for knights, bishops, rooks, queens, etc.

I hope you can help me out with these questions about the opening.
    Thanks.

  5. I am nine hundred I need opening for white

  6. Another TERRIFIC video! As a beginner I can't pretend to understand even half of this stuff, but it's coming. Thanks for the great content.

  7. โ€žd4 leads more often to positional play and e4 openings tend to get tactical.โ€

And then thereโ€™s me trying to learn the Queenโ€™s Gambit, the Italian game and the Caro-Kann.

  8. i am a really impatient but creative person, after i watch this video, now i know why i mostly lose the game every time i use setup base opening. i hate the game with slow pace movement and every space locked by the other piece.

  9. Such a great video! Iโ€™ve been looking for a way to understand openings and this video was perfect for that

  10. I'd reccomend the bird opening, cause it can also be mixed with the another opening, its really hard to explain, but its really good, i have proved it myself, im 820 elo, and it works 700-900 elo matches most of the time i havent figured it out if it can work in 1000 elo matches but ill get there, the bird opening is the best ong, with the right moves and the right moments, i forked so many pieces and discovered check the king multiple times

  11. The problem is always the combination you know… you need to learn so much for even one tactical opening with white, you need to know all your lines and especially in a certain elo where not everyone is playing in your main lines or does even make sensical moves, it just feels so bad to throw your hour long preparation out of the window, because your opponent is playing gugu gaga ape stuff ._.
And then you want to find something for black but thats also quite hard to learn and a lot of tactical openings, especially with black, only work if you opponent plays ONE certain move, most of the time its even the first move which predicts if you are able to play this position and the theory based lines.
This makes it INCREDIBLE hard to really grind and learn one specific tactical opening. Because most of the time under 1500 elo or so, you dont even get to play it because, you know, your opponent is playing King e2 on the second move or something idk

  12. I literally was thinking about which opening I should stick to and your video popped up. Thanks.

  13. Fantastic video, I realized I like the excitement of a riskier tactical game more than positional play and this gave me great ideas. Off to practice.

  14. I rrally enjoy playing the caro kann. Is it positional or tactical? Also I can't find an opening for white, as such I much prefer playing black. Anyway can you recommend and white openings that pair well with experienced caro kann players ?

Thank you for continuing to create such fantastic content. I'm a sub on multiple accounts ๐Ÿ˜…

  15. I want to ask you Coach, is it true we need to change our opening based on each levels like beginner, intermidiate and advance. Do we need to change our opening when we reach each levels? Or we can use 1 opening from beginner to advance level?

  16. You are the best chess teacher ๐Ÿ˜€

  17. I'm more comfortable with positional openings, but I want to get myself used to highly tactical board states. I'm going to learn a tactical opening as White and a positional opening as Black.

  18. I usually play kings indian as black and scotch game as white

  19. I think I am more tactical, positional games bore me.

  20. Your a Very Great teacher sir. Hope you see this comment cos I really appreciate you.

  21. My whole chess career Iโ€™ve been doing safe openings but itโ€™s been getting a little boring and I find Iโ€™m not able to beat people who do tactical openings and I canโ€™t really win the Mid game very well so Iโ€™m going to try switching to tactical openings such as the kings gambit

  22. is the Haxo Gambit positional or tactical?

  23. NM Lopez
    Good stuff ๐Ÿ‘
    Much appreciated! โ™Ÿ๏ธ

  24. I really enjoy your videos. But I wish yon would go slower! I have to play the video at half speed just to follow the moves!

  25. What if white plays d4, and if i play e6 would my setup still be a king's gambit "tactical"?

  26. Here is what I been honing slowly using what ive learned from this good channel. I gotta do my checks before i make a move otherwise i just blunder๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  27. Beginner (~1500) here, I don't understand the Slav setup described at 1:43. Isn't one of the biggest problems of this opening when to develop the bishop on c8? Like in this example, developing it to f5 that early leaves the d5 and b7 pawns vulnerable to a queen fork after cxd, cxd, Qb3. Am I missing something?

  28. This guys lessons are like classroom lessons so profound

  29. Nelson would you please make a video on the English opening

  30. Hi there!so I've played chess before when i was a kid,but i grew out of it for a while, and now that i'm back intrested again I do know only ONE opening :')
And I have a question: how do you know your opponent's gonna go as you think they would?what if they try to use a different technique than you?

  31. Good stuff man, nice and clear presentation, Thank u for sharing your knowledge๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŠ๐Ÿข

  32. In the last few months I've gotten back into chess. I find that the daily games are better for learning a new line than the rapid games for the obvious reasons. I still play the 10 minute games, but the daily ones give you a chance to think without the additional pressure of the clock.

  33. Is Italian and roy lopez opening tactical opening?

  34. The problem with all these tactics and openings is that it relies on the other person sucking at chess. Which is never the case for me lol it's just me that sucks.

  35. Good job! My rank was only 1875! Because of you I might just make it to 1925 by tonight!
