Choosing a chess opening can be tough for beginners and intermediate chess players. In this video I show you the different types of chess openings that are available, and why you might choose one over another. I talk about setup-based openings (also called positional openings), and theory-based openings (also called tactical openings). I give examples of each chess opening, including the London system, King’s Indian attack, Slav defense, Scandinavian defense (Icelandic gambit) and the King’s gambit. I give you the basic chess opening ideas and strategies for each type of chess opening, and give you chess tips and trick to choose the perfect chess opening for you.

I was wondering whether you can help me out here in understanding something. I always hear people saying that they were going to โplayโ X opening, but I never understand what that even means. Because doesnโt the opening which is โplayedโ depend 50% on what moves your opponent is going to play – meaning that you really never have 100% control going in, even if you think – โToday I am going to play the Spanish openingโโฆ Letโs say your opponent doesnโt respond rationally (assuming that there is always a 100% BEST and only move to respond to the first move in the sequence to โplayโ the Spanish opening) so therefore, you arenโt playing that opening, as the game has now gone off-script/theory – and/or transposed into another opening, etc.
In addition, if you are playing black, what would it even mean to โplayโ an opening, since every move you are making is responding to what white did? Does black have different specific openings which they would want to โplayโ in response to what white is trying to do?
These are exactly the reasons why I donโt believe in โplayingโ openings. To me, there are certain principles which I want to follow, as far as what I want to achieve in my โopeningโ (from the standpoint of how I want to play and coordinate my pieces) from a positional standpoint – but I wouldnโt memorize lines – since I want to actually see what I am doing.
Could you please help me out in understanding this?! (Sorry, if I sound like a novice. I donโt really play games of chess that often, but I periodically study the game. For example, I was just studying about the different player types: activist, pragmatist (both tacticians); reflector, theorist (both strategic/positional players). I have also studied tactics (fork/double attacks; pins; skewers) in the past; and I recently started studying strategy – positional understanding, for example, where the best places on the board are for knights, bishops, rooks, queens, etc.
I hope you can help me out with these questions about the opening.

i am a really impatient but creative person, after i watch this video, now i know why i mostly lose the game every time i use setup base opening. i hate the game with slow pace movement and every space locked by the other piece.

I'd reccomend the bird opening, cause it can also be mixed with the another opening, its really hard to explain, but its really good, i have proved it myself, im 820 elo, and it works 700-900 elo matches most of the time i havent figured it out if it can work in 1000 elo matches but ill get there, the bird opening is the best ong, with the right moves and the right moments, i forked so many pieces and discovered check the king multiple times

The problem is always the combination you know… you need to learn so much for even one tactical opening with white, you need to know all your lines and especially in a certain elo where not everyone is playing in your main lines or does even make sensical moves, it just feels so bad to throw your hour long preparation out of the window, because your opponent is playing gugu gaga ape stuff ._.
And then you want to find something for black but thats also quite hard to learn and a lot of tactical openings, especially with black, only work if you opponent plays ONE certain move, most of the time its even the first move which predicts if you are able to play this position and the theory based lines.
This makes it INCREDIBLE hard to really grind and learn one specific tactical opening. Because most of the time under 1500 elo or so, you dont even get to play it because, you know, your opponent is playing King e2 on the second move or something idk

I want to ask you Coach, is it true we need to change our opening based on each levels like beginner, intermidiate and advance. Do we need to change our opening when we reach each levels? Or we can use 1 opening from beginner to advance level?

I'm more comfortable with positional openings, but I want to get myself used to highly tactical board states. I'm going to learn a tactical opening as White and a positional opening as Black.
I usually play kings indian as black and scotch game as white

My whole chess career Iโve been doing safe openings but itโs been getting a little boring and I find Iโm not able to beat people who do tactical openings and I canโt really win the Mid game very well so Iโm going to try switching to tactical openings such as the kings gambit

Can London system work for black as well?
Beginner (~1500) here, I don't understand the Slav setup described at 1:43. Isn't one of the biggest problems of this opening when to develop the bishop on c8? Like in this example, developing it to f5 that early leaves the d5 and b7 pawns vulnerable to a queen fork after cxd, cxd, Qb3. Am I missing something?

In the last few months I've gotten back into chess. I find that the daily games are better for learning a new line than the rapid games for the obvious reasons. I still play the 10 minute games, but the daily ones give you a chance to think without the additional pressure of the clock.

The problem with all these tactics and openings is that it relies on the other person sucking at chess. Which is never the case for me lol it's just me that sucks.
