Magnus Carlsen is playing three games this weekend in the Norwegian League (Eliteserien) for his team Offerspillsk. These may be his last classical games as World Chess Champion.

The players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment from move 1.

  1. The time will come soon. Though there will be a new Classical Champion in the next few months. Magnus Carlsen will be our champion in our hearts. 🥰

  2. Magnus and his team are manipulating the world championship. Whoever wins now will obviously not be the true world champion. And after negotiations behind closed doors, Magnus will go through the cycle again and will be champion again … but for a sum of more than a millionaire.

  3. Magnus is a baby and a true dishonor to chess. Bobby, Gary, then Magnus.
He tinted his reputation, and his legacy he worked so hard to build. Shame. I expected more from the former has been Champion but somehow no surprised by the lack of maturity, all his mental abilities is in chess only so we can’t be so hard I guess.

  4. Magnus is gonna yoink the title back every once in a while I bet

  5. I don't want to see Magnus out of the board,I learn a Lot from his games,I hope he Will play the Grand prix again and aslo the candidates,to FINALLY get his title again.

  6. What sweet irony. He plays one of his best friends in his last classical game as world champion

  7. Magnus may lose the title of championship, but he will gain a title of GOAT

  8. What about just show the game, and at the end you can go trough all variations?

  9. It's just a title. I think most people will just go by the ratings and he'll still be the highest rating for a long time to come.

  10. Magnus got inspired by AlphaZero on that h4..!

  11. The new wcc would never feel content with the title

  12. I prefer Bishop F8 in the pause the moment

  13. i think next year Magnus going to play World Championship, because he want open candidate's that's why he did this and rude FIDE don't want to change their stupid laws rules.

  14. At 7:34, Agad makes it sounds like the c1's bishop is un-defendable after 36.Qd1. But what about 36.Ne6? It probably doesn't work but I wish Agad has explained this.

  15. Yes Agad ,
I am using the timestamps that you put in description so keep putting them!

  16. I think Magnus will not like hearing someone else referred to as WCC and will compete to reclaim the title in a year or so.

  17. Might not be World Chess Champion, but Best Chess Player in the World is still a title enough. Just rough winning the WCC and not beating the man at the top. Weird title year

  18. The bitter feeling of having to hold the title of "world champion", knowing there is a Magnus Carlsen on the planet.

  19. Would be a perfect plot twist if Magnus relinquishes the title just to reclaim it in the next cycle to prove that he doesn't just rely on draws to be the world champion.

  20. whatever happens at the WCC everyone knows who the champ is

  21. not surprised Magnus Fraudsen folded under pressure as usual and "gave up" his title when he knew he would get beaten by the better player, Ian. All his title wins have come from mickey mouse tournaments so hopefully he can win a real classical chess championship now because he has 0 titles in my book.

  22. Its just that no one could beat Magnus so he took the challenge and beat himself from the world champion title

  23. I love how so many people are emotional about Magnus playing his last classical tournament as World Champion. Truly the end of an era ❤

  24. is Magnus retiring from Chess? or is he just not defending it this time?

  25. Great thing is that I will remember him as unbeatable one!!

  26. Magnus will still be the champion even if someone else holds the title. And everyone knows it.

  27. At 8:48 how about bishop to f8 then knight to d6? Isnt that checkmate in 3

  28. 2:18 I've always found that if I play against my opponent's rating vs. what's on the board, I lose.

  29. He's still champion until the championship match is over

  30. Carlsen is the champ nobody else, ok I forgot about me, I'm the champ!!!!

  31. I think a lot of really good players do this. Why waste mental ressources on calculating lines, when you know that your endgame is winning. They save energy for the next game or preperation against stronger opponents. Being efficient seems more important than playing cool moves.

  32. You need to start calling it the FIDE Classical World Champion, as we all know who the actual world champion is.

  33. Magnus is the goat, with or without the title.
Btw. the position of the thumpnail is just beautiful.

  34. I've tried that H4 move. For me, it always ended in disaster. I guess that's why I'm a 1200.

  35. There is an interesting parallel to heavyweight boxing of all things here. When Muhummad Ali was banned from boxing after his refusal to fight in Vietnam, the World Boxing Council stripped him of the title and he was out of the sport for several years, from 1966 to 1970. In the meantime, other fighters like Joe Frazier rose up and won the title. When Ali returned to the sport, both men could legitimately claim to be World Champion-Frazier had the title, but Ali had never been beaten in the ring. In a similar fashion, even if Carlsen does not have the title, no one can actually claim to have defeated him.

I am aware that the details of the chess situation are different-Carlsen has not been prevented from defending his title, he has simply refused to do so. However, the result is still the same-no matter who holds the title, Carlsen can still maintain he is the true champion and the world's best player. How this impacts top-level chess going forward remains to be seen.

  36. how they decides who plays for world championship? just place 2 and 3?
