🔹 5 Best Chess Opening Traps in the Ruy Lopez –
🔹 Chess Openings: Ruy Lopez | Ideas, Theory, and Attacking Plans –

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you the most common chess opening mistakes or blunders in the Ruy Lopez which happens after the first moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5. You will learn how to punish Black’s mistakes in both the popular variations, 3…Nf6 which is the Berlin Defense, and 3…a6 which is the classical approach.

You will learn some really cool traps in these variations that give a strong, checkmating attack for White against the Black’s king. In fact, in one of the variations the most played moves by Black gives White a success rate of more than 74%, that’s huge!

  1. This is why I love playing chess there are many tricks and you can be creative in many ways

  2. I watch many of your videos and they all seem to have the same problem – you incorrectly state your opponent can only make one move. As in this video at the 7:07-minute mark. I quote you, " … therefore the king has to move". The truth is that the king does not have to move. Black could move either his bishop or his queen to block the check.

  3. I'm a Chess player from the Philippines. Ruy Lopez is my first opening I learned and used to play during my highschool days 💖

  4. in the ray lopez opening when the bishop attacks the white knight white moves the pawn and attacks the white bishop

  5. друже имаш много пропуски

  6. I’m new to chess but at min 11:42 looks like move 13 you say it’s checkmate no matter what black player does. what if black moves bishop to h4. I can only get a draw to occur. Thx love your videos.

  7. he sacraficed…. THE QUEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. 11:41 if black plays bishop h4 then how are you delivering a checkmate? Eventually you will still end up in a winning position cause you get a queen and a bishop for a rook after all the trades are done right? Is there something I can't see?

  9. That animation for kicking the knight at 1:47 cracked me up so much

  10. Thank you Igor, could you make a Video about the sicilian ? What thé plan for black, ans so?

  11. …so , the hell door Open ..

  13. What if he doesn’t take the knight after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4. O-O Nxe4 5.Re1 Nd6 6 Nxe5 but instead plays Be7?
Do we take the knight on c6 with bishop or knight?

  14. Ty !!!!! This is the line I like to always play. You have shown me many variations I can go.

  15. why on berlin defense, black defend with bishop e2? what if black defended with e2, our rook cannot take the knight e5, and it seems to be more optimal, how do we deal with that?

  16. Hi Igor, thank you for the video. It looks like to me that an opening 1. e4 followed by e6 by black is sufficient to make impossible the strategy showed in the first session of the video. Cheers.

  17. This was a great video Gotham has some competition.

  18. I don't know english very well, but your videos are really good and helpfull for me. Pozdrawiam 😊

  19. Why aren't other players moving their pieces the way he shows in the video?

  25. You are really a great chess teacher. I learned alot from just watching your vedios. I appreciate your hard work for students from all over the world.

  26. Thanks for this. I was very obsessed with c3d4 line. I have new variations to play with

  27. Yeah, Ruy Lopez is kinda tricky and that's why it's my favorite opening, even against high level bots. Just a mistake from black can easily get destroyed pawn's structure and it leads to advantages to white

  28. Great lessons. Greetings from Romania.

  29. What if at 11:42 bh4? And if Rook takes there is f6 and there won't be any mate. (I now I am late with this comment, because the video was posted a year ago)

  30. My opponents just never seem to play the right moves…

  31. If black can force the Ruy Lopez b6 bishop back w a7 and b7 pawn advances to b3 diagonal, can the game then be considered the Italian game, and then black can use, say, the Rousseau Gambit defense p-f5?

  32. Thank you, i tried it right now and 5 loose in row

  33. 1:13 lukir, kuda hitam maju ditengah
    Case 1
    2:07 kuda, menghindar sejajar belakang

  35. WHAT IF E4 E5 NF3 NC6 BC5 A6 BA4 AND PLAYS B5 RIGHT AWAY

  36. During the berlin defense, @3:28, if instead of blocking the king with the bishop, black uses the queen to block, your whole theory goes to shit…
