  1. The current chess boom, due to the internet, is bigger. One thing I remember about the Fischer boom was that you could buy a chess set basically anywhere. Gas stations, 7-11, drugstores, nearly everywhere almost anything was sold. We would play during recess in elementary school, chess was still pretty big through most of the 70s. In the 80s it kind of tapered off, then Kasparov came along and there was a kind of mini-boom. Likewise with Magnus as both gentlemen have charisma and were marketable.
